Violin Lessons FAQs

It’s a big range! Some of the old Italian instruments are worth millions. They are usually owned by foundations and loaned out to great players (who try not to lose them).

A professional violin may cost between $5000 and $80,000 but you can find great deals sometimes.

A beginner violin student can make beautiful music with a far less expensive instrument. Normally, student instruments cost between $200 and $500, and you can also rent one for as little as $150 for a whole year!

If you really want to own your own instrument but you want to spend less than that, there are deals to be found. One of our students got a fine beginner instrument on Kijiji for $80, including bow and case. Just make sure your involve us so we can make sure that you are getting a good instrument.

A good way to measure to make sure the violin you buy or rent is the right size for you is to put it on your neck as if you were going to play it and see how far it extends down your arm. If you can wrap your fingers around the scroll of the violin while your arm is straight then it is right for you. It’s better to have a violin that is a bit small than too big!

You can rent a good instrument at first, or rent to own, or you can often find great deals on second hand instruments on Kijiji, eBay, etc., but let us help you before you buy so you know that you are getting a good instrument.

Once you have found your violin we recommend a shoulder rest that fits it.

Also, you will need an adjustable music stand, the center of your practice space.

You will definitely need a metronome and a tuner and you have many free apps to choose from. You can use  a battery-operated metronome and tuner (Korg combines both in one little tool), and you can even use an old wind-up metronome if you like.

And finally, you will need a music dictation book for you or your teacher to write in to guide your practicing each day.
$30 for very young beginners for thirty minute lessons, $45 for 45 minute lessons for older beginners, $60 for one-hour lessons or $90 for 90 minute lessons for more advanced students
